On 25 June, a 42-foot ketch slipped out of Aasiaat, on Greenland's west coast, carrying one man and the intention to sail all the way around the top of the world without stopping. Matt Rutherford is attempting what no one has done — the first solo, nonstop, unassisted circumnavigation of the Arctic Ocean — and he is candid that the attempt is only possible because of a catastrophe. He can try it, he says, because there is less ice; and there is less ice because the planet is warmer. The voyage is not a stunt riding on the loss. The voyage is meant to be the measurement of it.

The route runs more than ten thousand miles through three of the most hostile stretches of ocean on Earth. From Greenland he sails the North Atlantic, down past Iceland and along the coasts of Norway, Sweden and Finland; then comes the hard part — roughly a month above Russia on the Northern Sea Route, a passage so controlled that Moscow normally requires a Russian pilot aboard, with the exemption for small pleasure craft introduced only last year and a permit Rutherford had to secure in advance. From the East Siberian Sea he crosses the Arctic Ocean toward Alaska and threads the Northwest Passage through the Canadian archipelago, aiming to be into Baffin Bay before October closes the ice back over the route, and home to Aasiaat to complete the loop. Nonstop and unassisted means exactly that: he cannot anchor, cannot put in to land, cannot take on help or supplies, and must meet every storm at sea. He gives himself, by his own estimate, about a three-in-four chance.

It is not his first improbable lap of a continent's worth of water. In 2011 Rutherford sailed alone and nonstop around North and South America — 27,077 miles in 309 days, in a forty-year-old, twenty-seven-foot sloop — and in the process became the first person to single-hand the Northwest Passage, a transit that took Amundsen three years at the start of the last century. He came home and, rather than chase the next record, founded a nonprofit, the Ocean Research Project, on a simple premise: if he was going to spend his life at sea, he would do it in a way that gave something back to the ocean.

What ORP gives back is data, cheaply. With the oceanographer Nicole Trenholm, Rutherford has spent more than a decade running scientific campaigns under sail — charting uncharted seafloor, tracking glacial melt, sampling microplastics across the Pacific, measuring the nutrients that feed plankton blooms and the carbon the cold water buries — at something like a twentieth of the cost of a conventional research vessel. On this voyage he will collect water samples used to test the ocean models NASA relies on to monitor Arctic waters; Trenholm calls the circumnavigation one long experiment around the North Pole ice pack. The stakes under the science are not abstract: as glaciers retreat, the chemistry of the fjords shifts in ways that change phytoplankton blooms and the Arctic's role as one of the planet's most important carbon sinks — and phytoplankton produce roughly half the oxygen on Earth.

The expedition's headline figure — that Arctic sea ice this summer is running nine to fifteen percent below the previous all-time record low — is its own framing, and worth holding to the publication's usual standard. The independently verified picture is sobering enough without it: this March, Arctic winter ice tied the record low for the second consecutive year, mid-June extent ranked fourth-to-sixth lowest in the satellite era, and the Arctic is warming three to four times faster than the global average. The summer-minimum record still belongs to 2012, and a summer's outcome can swing on a season's weather, so the precise number Rutherford will sail through is not yet written. But the thesis under his voyage does not depend on the number. A passage that was solid ice within living memory is now open water for a few months a year, and that is the part no one disputes.

Which is where the voyage turns pointed. Rutherford is sailing as official monitoring of the thing he is measuring goes dark: the expedition says U.S. polar-science funding was cut by 88 percent in 2025, and while that figure is the project's own, the direction is not in question — the National Snow and Ice Data Center, the long-standing public home of Arctic sea-ice tracking, now carries a notice that several of its tools are suspended for lack of renewed funding. A lone sailor in a borrowed boat, sampling the water by hand at a fraction of the cost, is in some literal sense stepping into a gap the world's richest country has chosen to open. Every mile he can sail is a mile of ice that should be there and is not. The record he is chasing and the warning he is carrying are the same fact. It is the polar twin of this week's lead — where St Helena marks a kind of landfall the changing world has closed, the Arctic marks a kind of passage the changing world has opened — and the companion to A Line Crossed in the Ice. The ice (calibrated). The expedition's stated "9–15% below the previous record low this summer" is its own framing; independently, the 2026 winter maximum tied the record low for a second year (14.29M km², NASA/NSIDC), mid-June extent ranked 4th–6th lowest, the Arctic is warming 3–4× faster than the global average, and the summer-minimum record still dates to 2012 (NASA; NSIDC/Carbon Brief; CNN; U.S. National Ice Center; Alaska Climate Research Center).

The funding cut. The "88% of US polar-science funding cut in 2025" figure is the expedition's; independently, NSIDC's Sea Ice Today notes several tools are suspended "due to non-renewed funding" (Ocean Research Project; NSIDC Sea Ice Today).
