The 52nd G7 summit, held 15–17 June on the French shore of Lake Geneva, was overtaken in the coverage by a single image: President Trump signing the US–Iran memorandum during a dinner at Versailles. That was the photograph. The substance was elsewhere, in nine declarations the leaders adopted while the cameras pointed at the signing.
On Ukraine, with President Zelensky present, the G7 committed to increase military support — air defence, interceptors and longer-range systems — in what France's own summary called a strategic awakening. On the Middle East, the leaders backed a diplomatic follow-on to the memorandum and restated that Iran must never obtain a nuclear weapon. Beyond the war headlines, the summit committed more than a billion dollars to the Bundibugyo Ebola response now straining eastern Congo; agreed to deepen cooperation on critical-mineral supply chains, the contested raw material of the AI build-out; made cancer a G7 priority for the first time; pledged to adapt AI systems to protect children; and agreed to coordinate against drug trafficking through international seaports. France ran the summit with an unusual method, drawing India, Kenya, South Korea, Brazil and Egypt into the discussions.
None of this is binding in the way a treaty is, and a communiqué is a statement of intent, not a guarantee of action — a fair criticism, and the same one being levelled at the Iran memorandum the summit spent its political capital endorsing. But for a publication that holds the lead should go to the story the feeds are not already saturated with, the nine declarations are the part of Évian worth reading.
